SMTP Gateway v1.00

TNZ SMTP Gateway

Connect your application to TNZ to send email, SMS, fax and voice messages through SMTP.

Set TNZ as your application's outgoing SMTP server. Send to an email address for email delivery, or use a TNZ service address to send SMS, fax or voice messages.

TNZ sends messages using the From address set on the TNZ User linked to your SMTP login.

Request SMTP Gateway access

Request access

Contact TNZ Support for SMTP Gateway access and your SMTP username and password.

Tell us which application you use, whether you want to send email, SMS, fax or voice, and your expected message volume. Include the From address you want to use.

Contact TNZ Support for help with setup.

Connection settings

Enter these settings in your application's outgoing mail or SMTP configuration. For the recommended connection, choose port 4465 and select SSL/TLS as the encryption mode.

SettingValue
SMTP serversmtp.tnz.co.nz
Implicit TLS (recommended)Port 4465. Select SSL/TLS in your application.
STARTTLSPort 587 or 2525. Select STARTTLS in your application.
Plain SMTPPort 2525, with encryption disabled.
AuthenticationRequired. Enter the SMTP username and password supplied by TNZ Support.
From addressTNZ uses the From address set on the TNZ User linked to your SMTP login, rather than the address in your application.

Choose the port that matches your encryption mode. STARTTLS starts an SMTP connection, then upgrades it to TLS. With implicit TLS, the connection is encrypted from the start.

Send your first email

  1. Configure your application with the SMTP settings above.
  2. Enable SMTP authentication and enter your TNZ SMTP credentials.
  3. Compose an email to a mailbox you control, with a subject and message body.
  4. Send the email, then check the recipient mailbox and the message's delivery result in the TNZ Dashboard.

Prepare the email body and attachments as you would in your usual email client, then send the email through the SMTP Gateway.

Example email

This example uses a placeholder recipient address. Replace it with the address of a mailbox you control.

TNZ uses your configured From address when it sends the email.

To: recipient@example.com
Subject: SMTP Gateway test

Hello,
This is a test message sent through the TNZ SMTP Gateway.

Send SMS, fax and voice

The recipient address determines how TNZ delivers the message. For email, use the recipient's email address. For SMS, fax or voice, combine the recipient's number with the service domain shown below.

Message typeDestination formatContent
Emailrecipient@example.comYour email body and attachments.
SMSNUMBER@sms.tnz.co.nzYour message text.
FaxNUMBER@fax.tnz.co.nzThe attached documents.
Fax with cover pageNUMBER@faxcp.tnz.co.nzYour email body as the cover page, followed by attachments.
VoiceNUMBER@voice.tnz.co.nzYour message text, converted to speech for a voice call.

NUMBER is a placeholder for the recipient's phone or fax number.

You can send one email to a mix of email addresses and TNZ service addresses. TNZ delivers to each recipient using the message type specified by their address.

Follow the Email-to-SMS, Fax & Voice instructions to prepare message text and attachments for those services. These formatting requirements also apply to messages sent through the SMTP Gateway.

Check delivery results

An SMTP acknowledgement confirms that TNZ received your submission. It does not confirm delivery to the recipient.

Check delivery results in the TNZ Dashboard. For email, the Status and Result fields show the outcome reported by the recipient's email server.

A successful email result means the recipient's server accepted the message. It does not confirm that the message reached the inbox or that the recipient read it.

See Email Delivery Result Codes for explanations of each result and the available notification options.

For SMS, fax and voice reporting, see message status reporting.

Troubleshooting

My application cannot connect.

Check the server name, port and encryption mode against the connection settings. Make sure your network allows outgoing connections to that server on the selected port.

My SMTP login fails.

Enable SMTP authentication and enter the username and password supplied by TNZ Support. Contact the team if you need help with your login.

The From address differs from my application's setting.

TNZ sends messages using the From address set on the TNZ User linked to your SMTP login. Contact TNZ Support if you need help changing that address.

My application says the message was sent, but it has not arrived.

Check the delivery result in the TNZ Dashboard. For email, also check the receiving mailbox's spam folder. Use the email result-code guide to interpret a failure.
